5 Minutes With... Camden Supernova
Tue 4 Apr
MEET TWO OF CAMDEN MARKET’S NEWER TRADERS SONIA, 28, FROM ITALY AND ELLEN, 35, FROM AUSTRALIA WHO TOGETHER MAKE UP CAMDEN SUPERNOVA.
A unique, hand-drawn t-shirt design company born out of a Camden love story (plus a love of punk music and horror movies), we caught up with Camden Supernova to find out more about their rock ‘n roll designs.
How did you guys get into setting up a stall in Camden Market?
For our products, we felt the market was a good starting place due to the diversity of traders selling original artwork and the variety of customers that visit the Market. It turned out we made a great choice. There are now people on every continent wearing our designs. It’s super exciting.
And what were you doing before you came to the Market?
Sonia has worked in and around the Market for many years and I worked for a health website. We were both ready for a change and the idea for Camden Supernova was born over a pint. London has been both of our homes for a long time and Camden in particular is special for us as it’s where we met and fell in love. This is our first company and the most fun job we’ve had.
Where do you get the inspiration for your characters and designs?
Sonia is the artist. Two of her great loves in this world are punk music and horror films. Since childhood she’s been drawing these sorts of characters but was too shy to show anyone until I saw them, loved them and convinced her that they had potential.
How long does it take you to go from coming up with a design to drawing it to having it printed?
Drawing for Sonia is a real passion, not just our business, so there are volumes of books of her drawings. As they are all done completely by hand, they can take any time from a couple of hours, to several days to complete. Once we are happy with the design, we send them off to be screen printed.
Do you have a favourite design?
My favourite design is our skeleton driving the car (which is now a best seller!) and Sonia’s is one of the latest designs that is still in the book, but should be making an appearance this summer.
What are your plans for the future?
We’re looking forward to an awesome summer. We’ll work hard to expand the company and brand and continue to try to keep rock and roll art alive, one shirt at a time.
